WPP and its agency JWT have hired an external lawyer to conduct an independent investigation following the lawsuit filed by the agency's communications director last week.
On March 10, Erin Johnson filed a lawsuit in New York against JWT and its CEO, Gustavo Martinez, alleging, among other things, that Martinez engaged in numerous "racist and sexist insults." Yesterday, her attorneys filed an amended complaint and requested permission to submit video evidence that would corroborate the allegations against Martinez.
WPP leadership received a message from the parent company declining to hire an external advisor.
Chief Executive Martin Sorrell added:
I only wanted to keep everyone informed about Erin Johnson's case. We've decided to hire an external law firm to conduct an investigation and assess the claims made in the complaint.
Sorrell hires external investigation
Erin Johnson has taken paid leave, and Gustavo Martinez continues in his role as CEO.
On the day the lawsuit was filed, Martin Sorrell sent a note to leadership mentioning an investigation that had been underway since February 25, but stated only that there was no evidence confirming the conduct Johnson alleged.
The day after the allegations surfaced, JWT issued a statement claiming the allegations are false and that Martinez denies all accusations. They added that every serious matter is thoroughly reviewed, and further comments will be made after the case is resolved in court and a judgment is issued.
Who is Bettina Plevan?
The company has chosen to hire Bettina Plevan. She is an employment law expert, former president of the New York City Bar, former member of the Governor's Council, and recently chaired the Standing Committee of the American Bar Association. As a representative of employers in sexual harassment cases, she appears to be a strong choice to defend Gustavo Martinez.
