Unlike previous demonstrations involving prototype base stations and devices using proprietary specifications, KT and Samsung validated their project using the Pyeongchang 5G Special Interest Group (SIG) specification, supported by a global group of operators and vendors. This group defines key technological requirements for 5G mobile services and is also working toward delivering the world's first 5G pilot mobile service in early 2018.

Today's success is based on a joint specification created through collaboration with many industry leaders and will help launch the world's first 5G pilot mobile service during the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics – said Sungmok Och, Head of Network at KT. KT will continue efforts to test 5G interoperability among multiple vendors throughout 2016 while also working toward deploying a test network for detailed verification in 2017.

"We are very pleased with our success in achieving the world's first end-to-end 5G connection just a few months after completing the Pyeongchang 5G SIG joint specification process," said Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Executive Vice President and Head of Next Generation Communications Team at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung is enthusiastically committed to continuing cooperation with industry leaders worldwide as we work to achieve further milestones in next-generation networking and bring 5G technology closer to everyday communication.
