SSL

Secure Sockets Layer

A historical encryption protocol that has been deprecated due to security vulnerabilities. The term is commonly used today — modern 'SSL certificates' are actually TLS certificates.

Why it matters

The term is everywhere: in hosting offers, control panels, and client conversations. It's important to know that purchasing 'SSL' typically means you're getting TLS.

What's missing without it

Actual SSL protocols are now rejected by browsers — connections using SSL 3.0 will not establish at all.

When it is used

When ordering a certificate, discussing with a hosting provider, or reviewing security audit results.

How we use it

We say 'SSL certificate', but install TLS 1.2 or 1.3.
