DPI

Dots Per Inch

A measure of dot density, most commonly used in the context of printing and scanning. In practice, when preparing printed materials, it specifies the required image detail for the final physical size.

Why it matters

Determines print sharpness: too few dots per inch results in a blurry logo on a billboard viewed up close. The required value depends on viewing distance — a flyer needs more than a megaboard.

What's missing without it

A file with too low resolution looks fine on screen but terrible in print — and the error only becomes apparent after printing.

When it is used

When preparing files for printing: 300 DPI for materials viewed up close, less for large format.

How we use it

The system warns when graphics for A4 print do not meet required resolution, e.g., 300 DPI.

Fun fact

Three letters, two completely different worlds: in printing, it’s dots per inch; in investment funds, it’s the payout-to-capital ratio. Our glossary lists both entries separately.
