RTO

Recovery Time Objective

The maximum acceptable time required to restore a service after a failure. Helps determine backup, redundancy, monitoring, and disaster recovery procedures.

Why it matters

Defines how long a company can withstand being without the system: a quarter-hour, an hour, a day. This number determines whether backup alone is sufficient or if a hot standby is needed.

What's missing without it

Without a recovery time target, restoration takes 'as long as it takes' — and during an outage, it becomes clear that every hour of downtime costs more than redundancy would have.

When it is used

When planning business continuity: selecting architecture, procedures, and budget for an acceptable downtime.

How we use it

An RTO of 2 hours means the CMS dashboard must be restored within a maximum of two hours.
