RPO

Recovery Point Objective

The maximum acceptable data loss expressed in time. RPO defines how recent a backup or replication must be for a company to accept recovery after a failure.

Why it matters

Answers the question of how much data a company can afford to lose: an hour, a day, none. This decision determines backup frequency and the overall cost of the solution.

What's missing without it

Without a defined recovery point, a 'once daily' backup is a coincidence, not a decision — and during a failure, it turns out that losing a day's worth of data is too much.

When it is used

When designing backup and replication strategies, separately for each system based on data importance.

How we use it

An RPO of 15 minutes means that after a failure, a maximum of 15 minutes of changes may be lost.
