A system mechanism that runs commands according to a specified schedule. Used for backups, synchronization, data cleanup, reports, and periodic tasks.
Why it matters
Ensures repetitive tasks run automatically and on time: backups at night, reports in the morning, log cleanup weekly. The server remembers what humans forget.
What's missing without it
Without a scheduler, recurring tasks depend on human memory — a 'manual Friday backup' will eventually be missed.
When it is used
For backups, synchronization, periodic reports, data cleanup, and any operation scheduled by calendar.
How we use it
Cron runs a database backup and deletes expired temporary files every night.
